Novel Writing Retreats Australia has up to six scholarship places available for a 9 day/8 night Breakout Novelist Retreat in 2014.

The Breakout Novelist Retreat takes place on Feb 15-23, 2014 at the retreat property located in Taroona, Tasmania, with retreat facilitator Steve Rossiter and Sunday Times bestselling novelist Ben Kane.

Applications are open to novel writers living in Australia. Published and unpublished writers are equally welcome to apply. The idea is to stand out from other novelists, so if you're a published novelist don't just submit a proposal for the next novel like your previous ones. Unpublished writers may have an advantage in this sense, since their ideas may be fresher than someone used to writing in a particular way.

Applications close at midnight on November 30, 2013. There is no application fee.
Successful applicants will be notified on December 5, 2013.

Each scholarship includes the normal benefits of a paid retreat - accommodation (in your own room), food, lessons, consultations and discussions - but with more emphasis on making your novel-in-progress a breakout success. Travel to and from the retreat property is the responsibility of each writer.

To apply, provide:

1) The concept for your novel-in-progress:
A title, a tagline (15 words or less) and a back-cover-style synopsis (100 words or less)

2) A 1-3 page outline of your novel-in-progress

3) The first 2500-3000 words of your novel manuscript

4) A brief author background statement:
A statement of 300-500 words addressing your professionalism, your approach to being a novelist and your personal background to the extent that it is relevant to your novel writing.

Submission method:

Email your application to novelwritingretreatsaustralia@hotmail.com as an attached document (.doc or .docx), with each of the four steps starting on a new page.

The content of your application will not be shared online. If you are shortlisted, you will have the option of making your title, tagline, back-cover-style synopsis and an excerpt of about 75-100 words from your first 2500-3000 words available to be shared on this site (www.novelwritingretreatsaustralia.com) and linked to on social media sites to help you and your work get discovered by readers, literary agents and publishers.

Little Red Gem book tour

***UPDATE
Little Red Gem is going on tour again this December 2014 through to February 2015 with Goddess Fish Promotions. You can sign up through Goddess Fish Promotions http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/nbtm-tour-little-red-gem-by-dl.html

LITTLE RED GEM book tour

Here are the links for the blog tour for my latest teen paranormal romance novel. I booked this tour myself, rather than go through a tour company. I've done blog tour in the past with companies. This one I thought I'd do on my own to compare the two platforms. I can't say either is better or worse. Both involve lots of work.

I got this list from a reviewer but I can't locate her contact right now. I'll check through my emails and post the contact details. She has access to a pretty thorough list of blog operators. As with paid book tours, there were a few blogs that didn't spotlight on the day, there were a few I followed up and gave them extensions on, and there are still a few more I need to follow up on.

Cover reveal - By Force by Sara Hubbard COMING JAN 3 2014

Today I spotlight the new release by Sara Hubbard. What a beautiful cover. I love the colours. This looks like it will be an exciting read.

cover reveal...

Synopsis:
Getting kidnapped would set her free…

Isame doesn’t want to marry the man her parents chose for her. She wants more: the freedom to travel, the freedom to explore, but most of all, the freedom to choose the life she wants instead of the one her parents expect. When Isame leaves her home to accept a man's proposal, she encounters five fierce, handsome warriors. She wonders why they’ve travelled so far from home. She never imagines their purpose might have something to do with her, not even after they’ve kidnapped her.

Remmie is a fiercely loyal man who is true to his word. When his king commands him to find a young woman on the island of Copaxa, he doesn’t expect the puny woman to hold his attention or to make him consider turning his back on his brothers in arms and his king. But Isame is special and he can see it from the start. Soon he must decide if she is worth losing all he knows and loves for the girl that's worked her way under his skin and into his heart.

Release date : January 3, 2014.

Review - Robocalypse by Daniel H Wilson

I don't normally post reviews on my blog, but I have to post a review for Robocalypse by Daniel H Wilson.

I loved it. It's the best book I've read since The Hunger Games trilogy. Once I turned that first page I couldn't put it down.

The story starts at the end of the robot wars when the narrating character, Cormac Wallace, locates what is considered to be the "black box" of the war. He switches on the black box and the stories of the initial incidents and fights with the robots is played back to him and he feels that he has to write all this down.

"Memories fade but words hang around forever," is what Cormac states when he switches on the black box.

The book flicks between characters with each chapter featuring an opening narration by Cormac. It didn't bother me at all that I got inside the minds of multiple characters. I enjoyed it actually, and I liked some characters better than others. The author does a fabulous job of giving each character a unique voice. My favourite character is Takeo Noumra. He is an elderly Japanese repairman in a factory with autism who also happens to have a relationship with an android. It is his "love" for robots that sees him override the corrupt transmissions the robots are receiving from the rogue artificial intelligence known as Archos who is responsible for the war. The way Takeo helps the robots attain freedom is beautifully human.

My favourite quote from the book is this one:

"It is not enough to live together in peace, with one race on its knees." Archos.

This quote sums up why the A.I. did what he did, and when you start to see the new world he is creating you almost wish the robots would win. Almost.

I give Robocalypse 5 out of 5.
